Reader Challenge: How do I get the best deal…

Elizabeth emailed me and told me about an HP6310 All-in-One Printer that she was interested in getting. She had seen it for 50% off at Office Max and asked if I could do a quick tutorial on how I would go about figuring out if that was a good deal.

So here is my quick tutorial on how to make sure you are getting the best deal (without spending more then 15 minutes researching).

Elizabeth…while this deal looks great (50% off today for only $74.99) in 15 minutes I found you a better deal by doing these things:

  1. In my swagbucks search engine I typed in the type of printer you wanted. (side note I won 2 swagbucks which added to my other earnings will let me get $15 in Starbuck gift cards  just for doing a basic search)
  2. I was going to research the cost of that printer at four places that tend to offer competitive deals Walmart, Newegg (electronics), Amazon, and SamsClub.
  3. I discovered that Newegg had the lowest price by far with free shipping.
  4. I did a quick search on retailmenot to discover if any of the above stores had any coupon codes that could make the deal any better, they did not.
  5. I went to ebates and cashbaq to see which free program offered the most cashback for newegg.

Elizabeth based on my 15 minutes of research here is how to get that printer for the best deal that I see.

Go to ebates and log on or register for a new account.

On the top right hand side is a drop down menu that says “select a store” select the store “newegg”

You will be automatically redirected to newegg.

One there type in the printer you want in the search engine for the site (HP OFFICEJET 6310)

You will see the price is $44.99 with free shipping. Add to cart and check out as normal.

You will pay $44.99 out of pocket but you will get a check (when you earn over $5) from ebates for $5.89 if you opened a new account or .89 cents if you used an account you already had. This will bring your total cost of the printer shipped to you for $39.10 or $$44.10 a much better deal 🙂

Use this basic process for any item you wish to purchase online and see how much you can save —

80% off at Restaurants.com

I just got an email that right now through February 28th you can get a Restaurant.com gift certificate for 80% off. You can use your certificate after Feb 28th but it must be ordered by then for the deal.

That is a $25 dining certificate for only $2!!!

At the checkout enter coupon code: DINE to get your savings.

For the best deal use your free cashbaq account and get 25% back on your purchase. (you can enter to get a new account and get $5 for signing up and then 25%  back). This would make your certificate only $1.50 or THEY WOULD PAY YOU $3.50 if you are signing up for cashbaq for the first time for your certificate!)

Here is how it would work at a local restaurant near us (Woody’s on the Water)

$25 gift card bought through cashbaq (on the cashbaq site click on “shop through store” then restaurant.com) = $1.50

Minimum $35 purchase not including tax and gratuity = $35

Minus the $25 certificate = -$25

TOTAL COST FOR A $35 dollar dinner out = $11.50 + tip THAT IS a cheap DATE!

What to do with all that chocolate…

If you went up to Walgreens (there is still time!) to snag your 17 bags of hersheys kisses for .03 cents each you may be sitting at home surrounded by hersheys kisses thinking…now what?!?

Here is our plan to get the most out of our finds:

1-saving 1 bag for the kiddos easter baskets

2-giving several bags to our favorite charity

3-Baking cookies!(see below!)

4-storing the remainder in our outdoor freezer to prevent against snacking and use them for cookies throughout the year!)

5-Using them to create cookie gift jars to friends, neighbors and as “just because I love you” gifts. (great recipes for that here…)

My husband (the best cookie maker) made a delicious batch of cookies using 1/2 a bag of the caramel filled kisses. The combination of Caramel and chocolate was AMAZING and so delicious! Here is how he did it. He took our favorite chocolate chip cookie recipe and added half a bag of the unwrapped kisses to the dough. He mixed it in our kitchenaid (which broke up the kisses into smaller pieces) then baked them following the directions for Choc. Chip cookies. The result? AMAZING! I’d show you a picture but they have already been eaten 🙂

What are you going to do with your find?

Frugal Friday Recipe-Make your own dryer sheets

Frugal Friday Recipe: Making your own dryer sheets

Making your own dryer sheets is easy, great for the environment and uses so few ingredients.

Here are my top reasons to make your own dryer sheets 🙂

1-easy, easy, easy -About 5 minutes of “prep” for a years worth of dryer sheets

2- Healthy! Avoid many of the potential dangers that fabric softeners could pose for your family

3-very economical. Savings of .0677/load if you do five loads a week that is a savings of $17.60/year! (see geeky calculations at the bottom of the post

4-You can create your favorite scents

Step 1: Gather your ingredients:

White distilled vinegar (1-2 cups)

Essentail Oil (your favorite scent) 6-12 drops

spray bottle and old rag

Step 2: Mix 1-2 cups of vinegar with 6-12 drops of oil (put in the amount of oil for desired “scent”). Put on lid and mix

Step 3: Spray a rag 5-10 times with mixture and throw in dryer

Step 4: Repeat. You can use 4-8 times before you need to re-apply. 1-2x/month wash rag to remove build up!

FAQ

What does the vinegar do?

Vinegar is a natural fabric softener. You can use it in your washer as well (baking soda too) but I find that just using my homemade dryer sheets gets clothes soft enough.

Do your dryer sheets reduce static ?

The number one cause of static is over drying 🙂 I do find that this reduces static. Another trick is to attach a safety pin to the edge of your home-made dryer sheets. This eliminates static (not sure why should ask my husband, the chemist 🙂

Do your clothes smell like vinegar?

Nope they smell like lavender, or vanilla depending on the scent I am using 🙂

GEEKY CALCULATIONS:

16 oz white vinegar $1.32

-price / cup = .52 centse

-price / batch = .52 cents

Essential Oil (5ml)= $6

-price / drop (approx) =.02 cents

-price / batch =.12 cents

Spray bottle: $.50 cents at the dollar store

Electrical Costs: NONE

Number of loads of laundry/ spray bottle (what I can get) 488

Total cost for 1 batch: $ .64 cents (or $1.14 if you have to buy the spray bottle)

price/ load of laundry = .0013 cents (that is alot less the 1 penny / load)

The average of cost / dryer sheet = .069 cents

Savings of .0677/load if you do five loads a week that is a savings of $17.60/year!
